Drowning is a major cause of death in children. As the summer season of fun around water approaches, the Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA is offering a program specifically aimed at preventing drowning. Called “Safety Around Water,” this is subsidized by a USA Swimming Foundation Learn to Swim grant. It’s for kids who are nonswimmers or beginners, aged five to 12. A program for kids who may have diverse abilities or disabilities will be included.
The program provides five 50-minute classes on Fridays, from 3:30 to 7:20 p.m., according to age group. The classes run May 21 through June 18. The price is $10 for the five weeks of lessons.
All COVID precautions will be in place. These include check-in, face masks worn in the building, limited spectators, limited personal contact, and more.
