Millville Educator Earns Yale Educator Award
Thomas Herman of Millville Senior High School has been recognized by the Yale Office of Undergraduate Admissions as a recipient of the 2022 Yale Educator Award.
The Yale Educator Recognition Program recognizes outstanding educators from around the world who support and inspire their students to perform at high levels and to achieve excellence. Of this year’s 339 nominees, who represent
43 states and 21 countries, 48 teachers and 29 counselors were selected to receive the award. Matriculating students are invited to nominate high school educators, and a committee of Yale admissions officers reviews each nomination and designates recipients. Earlier this month, the winners were sent their awards with congratulatory letters, and administrators of the high schools were notified of their achievement.
Herman is a member of the Millville High School counseling team, which serves students in grades 9-12. He earned his counseling degree at Wilmington College in 2011. Herman provides regular counseling services to MHS students, and he also heads up the school’s Early College Program, in which high school students take college-level courses with Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ), with the intention of obtaining an Associates degree. Herman is also responsible for students in the AVID program, which is a track of elective courses at MHS intended to prepare students for college, as well as the anti-bullying specialist at Millville High School.
“Suffice to say, Tom wears a lot of hats and is truly a dedicated member of our district staff,” a school spokesperson notes. “He has been with Millville Public Schools since 2018, and in that short time he has had a tremendous impact on his students at Millville High School.”

Currently, 64 percent of Yale undergraduates receive financial assistance, and Yale budgets more than $180 million annually for need-based financial aid. The 1,558 members of the Yale Class of 2026 who began their first semester in August 2022 graduated from more than 1,100 different high schools.
The Yale Admissions Office attributes the exceptional quality of the Yale student body to educators like the recipients of the 2022 Yale Educator Award, who shape their students long before they attend Yale. The Admissions Office is proud to thank these and all educators for their ongoing efforts in motivating and supporting their students.
