Soggy Ground: Valuing Vineland’s Wetlands

The Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society (VHAS) will host special guest Mark Demitroff for a discussion of “Soggy Ground: Valuing Vineland’s Wetlands” on Sunday, August 20, at 1 p.m.

Wetlands have long intrigued us. For centuries bogs, mires, and meadows were regarded as forlorn topography—places replete with legend and lore. VHAS-member Demitroff will present an overview on how to read the wet environment of the Vineland area. Ice age landforms provide critical habitat for plants and animals. People here have exploited these wetland resources for over 14,000 years, and developed a distinctive agriculture to make barren ground productive. Places will be woven together in a geographic tapestry of interactions between nature and society.

Donations are welcome and appreciated. A $5 donation to VHAS is suggested. The VHAS Museum is located at 108 S. Seventh Street in Vineland.
