Millville Public Schools Announces New Project-Based Learning Program

This school year, a select group of students at Lakeside Middle School will experience a hands-on, project-based approach to learning using a program that has proven to motivate and inspire students across the nation.

The Lightning Learning Team, created by NOLA Education, is a full-time “school-within-a-school” where students learn core subjects including English, math, science, and social studies through hands-on projects and multimedia experiences while working together. In the course of their studies, they are also introduced to hundreds of potential careers. This program has proven effective both for students who have fallen behind and for motivated students who want to excel. It satisfies all state standards for curriculum and standardized testing.

“We are so excited to have this program in Millville,” said Dr. Matt Mazzoni, superintendent of schools. “This program has had a big impact nationwide, especially for students who have fallen behind academically. We are committed to work with NOLA Education to offer a program that weighs heavily on providing authentic learning opportunities to the cohort of students.”

Students who are bored and unmotivated in a typical lecture-based classroom are often re-engaged when learning through team projects and multimedia. Program teachers, selected from existing school teaching staff, move about the classroom assisting, encouraging, and working directly with students rather than delivering lectures. Furniture is arranged for team and group projects, with technology, equipment, and project materials in plain view, making the classrooms stimulating environments for learning.

In addition to academic subjects, students are introduced to a multitude of careers—from food science, to physical therapy, to weather forecasting—gaining an understanding of how what they are learning can be applied in the real world. The program also imparts valuable “soft skills” such as responsibility and working well with others.

The all-inclusive program includes training and professional development for teachers and administrators and turn-key installation, along with all necessary equipment, furniture, and materials.

Classes take place in the Lakeside Middle School building, so students are not separated from their peers. They engage in the same activities outside the classroom, and the hours are consistent so transportation arrangements remain the same.

“We’re thrilled to partner with NOLA and support our Lakeside students in a new and innovative way,” said Amanda Gaunt, principal of Lakeside Middle School. “Our Lakeside Learning Team will have an opportunity to participate in a collaborative, hands-on environment. We look forward to seeing their successes this year and for years to come.”

The program has proven itself in 16 states, typically driving improvements in test scores, grades, attendance, and disciplinary referrals.
