A Night in Nevermore
October 7 marked the 176th anniversary of the death of American writer and poet Edgar Allen Poe. How better to celebrate his literary legacy than a POE-themed program at the historical and society building!
On Tuesday, October 7, the Vineland Historical Society welcomed Poe devotees from the area to raise a glass to the master of the macabre at “A Night in Nevermore,” a literary event celebrating the gothic master.
Literary vignettes were strewn about the steps and stage of the museum. Each table celebrated a famous POE work, such as “The Black Cat” and “The Premature Burial.” Ravens and gothic décor abounded.
The night began with a reading of “The Raven,” delivered by Chris Mohan dressed in black tails. Savory offerings of Tell-Tale Heart salad, Annabel Lee-k and POE-tato soup, crab POE–boy sandwiches and The Raven deviled eggs provided a light supper. Lafayette gingerbread hearts with Poe’s Family Egg Nog crème anglaise or butter rum sauce satisfied the sweet tooth.

Knowledge of POE’s short stories and poetry was tested during “Is it Poe…or No?” and “Two Truths and a Lie.” A “moment for the musings of the many” allowed guests to share their original poetry, a favorite Poe writing, or a Poe experience.
The night was capped off with a reading of “Annabel Lee” and champagne at the Poe after-party. Guests then received an envelope containing heavy metal song lyrics and lines of Poe poetry. They were challenged to create an original poem combining the two genres. Worlds collided, but successfully. We think Edgar would approve.
