Theater Teaches…

Despite the lingering heat, the time has come: It’s back-to-school season. However, learning and creating long-lasting family memories should continue even after the school bell tolls. As a South Jersey kid myself, I know Cumberland County is bustling with opportunities for children to grow. A newly renovated library holds worlds for our local youth, WheatonArts is open throughout the fall (have you heard about Wheaton Wednesdays?), and picking up apples and pumpkins from Ingraldi Farm Stand is just around the corner.

This season, however, Levoy Theatre is bringing to light a learning opportunity your family won’t want to miss—The Diary of Anne Frank. The show runs from October 3 through 6. Details at levoy.net

Marymount Manhattan College said it best a few years ago: “Our past not only informs, it inspires. From ancient Greek tragedy to 17th-century Shakespearean comedy; from post-war musical theater to current conversations of a darkened Broadway, theater has inspired its artists, communities, and societies throughout time.”

Watching historical theater can help children understand, sometimes for the first time, that they exist within the context of all that has come before them.

Opening up the world through theater can improve social skills, mental health, and be a safe way to educate children on extremely troubling topics.
