The Cumberland County Library, located at 800 E. Commerce Street, is excited to partner with the Bayshore Center at Bivalve this summer. The library is offering a custom summer reading program, “Set Sail with Cumberland County Library and the Bayshore Center at Bivalve,” which celebrates Cumberland County’s bayshore history. Funding for the program has been made possible in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission / Department of State, and the Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders through the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission.
Children’s Librarians Stephanie Rockliss and Linda Comfort have put together a list of resources revolving around the bayshore theme for children in pre-K through 8th grade and have planned a variety of story hours and children’s events that also tie in with the theme. On July 29, beginning at 10:30 a.m., the library will host a bayshore-themed Monday FUNday with special guest Captain Johann Steinke from the AJ Meerwald and author of The Greatest Captain in the World, in addition to a variety of fun and educational activities from the Bayshore Center at Bilvalve. The event is free and open to children of all ages. No registration is required.
The highlight of the program is a chance for 20 children, plus one guardian per child, to win a sail aboard the AJ Meerwald. There are a number of ways that children may earn entries, which include attending events at the Cumberland County Library in the months of July and August, visiting the Bayshore Center at Bivalve, reading materials from the library’s bayshore-themed resource list or their school’s summer reading list, tracking their summer reading using the Library’s reading log, or finishing an activity sheet. Winner will be announced on Wednesday, August 21.
The Cumberland County Library will be hosting two kick-off events, allowing people to “Set Sail” with them this summer. The first event will be on Monday, July 8, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., at the library; meanwhile, the second event will be on Friday, July 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Bayshore Center at Bivalve. No registration is required. Information about the summer reading program will be available at the events and people may also sign up for library cards at that time as well.
