Celebrating 45 Years of Bally’s – A Guide to the Old Casino’s New Look

A few years ago, if anyone asked me about casino hotels worth visiting in New Jersey, Bally’s Casino Atlantic City is probably something I wouldn’t have at the top of my head.

I always thought of it as dated, even Bally’s Chicago Casino, which I’ve also visited a few times. So, when I heard that Bally’s Atlantic City underwent extensive renovations last year for its 45th anniversary, I was intrigued.

A $100 million renovation? That’s not chump change, and surely, the upgrades must be significant. I had to see everything for myself, and I’m glad I was able to.

Booking My Stay to Visit Bally’s Atlantic City Casino

I booked my stay on Bally’s official website, where I found some great room packages for overnight and a few nights’ stay. I would stay at least 2 nights, the minimum for the Therapeutic Massage Room Package.

So, that’s what I went with. I found dates available as early as the next day but booked my stay for the following week instead. I got a great deal since I only paid over $85 per night. Their overnight rates can go as high as $100 for other packages.

The email confirmation I got from my booking said I would only be assigned a room once I got there. This is a bummer because I wanted to ensure I got a room at Bally’s Tower instead of Dennis Tower.

However, I figured the package I went with was spa-related, and Bally’s Tower has the new spa. If I don’t, I will probably ask if I can be moved or get an upgrade. I wasn’t planning to gamble much anyway, so I’ll spend extra for the room if I need to (spoiler alert: I did).

First Impressions of the Casino

When I arrived, I didn’t notice many changes by the boardwalk. They still have the old signage on the main entrance, but an electronic board was added on top of it. The Johnny Rocket’s upfront was still there and looked the same.

Checking in was quick, but unfortunately, I was assigned to the Dennis Tower. I asked for an immediate upgrade to Bally Tower’s Jr. Suite with a view, and it was worth it.

Bally’s Tower felt modern compared to what Dennis looked like. I got a corner room on the 30th floor, and it had stunning views of the Atlantic City skyline and the ocean. Even the bathroom had a view of the north end of the boardwalk.

The room was light and bright, with a king-sized bed. The furniture still looked new, and the bathroom was clean. I also liked the modern tub and thought I’d have a nice time in it after dinner and playing at the casino.

Trying Out Park Place Prime

Before arriving, I thought I’d check the casino right away, but I decided against it. I was hungry when I got to my room, so I went straight to Park Place Prime after settling in. I saw that this steakhouse was renovated, so I had to have dinner there.

I thought the place was fancy, and I was glad I was dressed properly. Check-in was at 4 PM, also when the restaurant opened. I got there around 5 PM, and the place still had plenty of seats.

It was Happy Hour, so I was tempted to just have some calamari and a dirty martini. However, I was craving something heavier and wanted a nice dinner. I got a seat and ordered a Prime Dry Aged New York Strip ($68) and an espresso martini ($16).

Trying My Luck at the Casino

Feeling full, I went straight to the casino, which looked better than I remember it. I think they also added more games and slot rooms. I focused on slot machines and tried games like Buffalo Gold and Coin Trio. I also played a bit of video poker.

I passed by their new high-limits table room and slot rooms. I was tempted, but I just wasn’t feeling lucky that day after having to upgrade my room.

I stayed a bit at the Bally Bet Sportsbook, though. The palace was also new, and I was impressed with the massive video wall showing various sports. I also skipped this one and just enjoyed watching what’s on the screen and other visitors paying close attention to their wagers.

I got to chit-chat with one person for a bit. I mentioned I found the changes pleasant, and he agreed. Apparently, Bally’s Players Club was voted best by some magazine last year, and that’s what motivated him to visit.

He also talked about Bally’s VIP lounge, which was also new. He showed me some pictures, and it was indeed a lovely room with an ocean view. I imagine it’s a great spot to hang out if you want a break from the casino floor, which was mostly dimly lit by the slot machines.

Overall, I could easily tell why it is one of the largest gambling companies out there.

Trying Out the Spa at Bally’s

I know the spa is only open until 6 PM, so when I made arrangements for this, I scheduled it for the next day. So, on my first night, relaxation mainly was me enjoying the tub with a glass of wine I ordered from room service.

The spa room package I booked included a 30-minute therapeutic massage, and I had it booked as soon as they opened (10 AM). The spa itself was small but nicely decorated, with calming colors and soft lighting.

They had these spa chairs in the lobby. I asked about it, and they said I could pay extra to get a head, back, and foot massage in one of them before or after I go into the massage room.

Honestly, I was expecting more from this spa experience, but I left there feeling refreshed and energized. Maybe I should’ve gone with a longer session to have enjoyed it better. However, I wanted to explore the place more and try out another one of their new spots for drinks.

The Boardwalk and The Yard

Atlantic City Bally’s has convenient access to the boardwalk, so I took advantage of that. I spent some time walking around, just enjoying the weather and ocean views. I was lucky because the weather was pleasant, and the whole boardwalk wasn’t too crowded.

I didn’t go too far from Bally’s, though, and I went back to try The Yard, part of something new for Bally’s Entertainment. It’s a gastropub with indoor and outdoor seats. The outdoor area was delightful because of its greenery and comfy couches.

I ordered their Signature Pale Ale and waited for the night to set in. The place suddenly looked cozy with warm lights, and more people were around to get some drinks. As far as I know, The Yard can be booked for events, and from what I’ve seen, it would be a great venue for parties.

Bally’s New Era – Final Words

I had another go at the casino after visiting The Yard and got a bit lucky at the blackjack tables. I called it a night after that and had a nice quiet in my suite. I looked back to the few times I visited Bally in the past, and I’m glad they finally gave it a much-awaited upgrade.

The new restaurant, rooms at the casino, and modern rooms at Bally’s Tower all made the visit worth it. I can’t wait to see how the Chicago branch will also transform in the future because I heard they’re spending more for that.
