Reconstruction of Interchange at Routes 49/55 Topic of Public Meeting

An in-person Public Information Center (PIC) will be held on Wednesday, September 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the City of Millville Municipal Building, 12 S. High Street, Millville, regarding the reconstruction of the interchange at Route 49 and Route 55 in Millville.

It will provide local residents and businesses with information and the public is encouraged to actively participate by attending the meeting and providing comments at the meeting, via mail, or by email. 

You will have an opportunity to review exhibits of the project, ask questions, and discuss any concerns with NJDOT representatives. Property owners with rental units are advised that tenants are invited and encouraged to participate in the process. The bridges have been identified as in need of full replacement. The existing bridges were constructed in 1966 and consist of steel girders with reinforced concrete decks. Each bridge has a span length of 120 feet, a width of 45 feet and carries two lanes of Route 55 traffic over Route 49. The posted speed on this segment of Route 55 is 65 mph.

The southbound bridge will carry two 12-foot-wide lanes with a five-foot-wide inside shoulder and a 12-foot-wide outside shoulder. The span length of the proposed replacement bridges will match the existing span length at 120 feet. Both Route 55 bridges will be reconstructed to provide 16.5 feet vertical under clearance for traffic on Route 49.

During construction of the proposed bridges, a two-lane temporary bridge in the center grass median and temporary roadway realignments will be utilized to maintain two lanes of traffic on Route 55 in both directions. Each existing bridge will be replaced in one major construction stage while traffic is shifted onto the temporary bridge. It is anticipated that the Route 55 northbound bridge will be replaced first followed by the Route 55 southbound bridge. The Route 49 eastbound ramp to Route 55 northbound will be closed and detoured during construction of the Route 55 northbound Bridge.

The project proposes full replacement of both bridges.
