Piney Hollow United Methodist Church To Mark 170th Anniversary
Sunday, October 26
Piney Hollow United Methodist Church 170th Anniversary Service. 2033 Piney Hollow Rd., Newfield (at the end of Dutchmill Rd.). 2 p.m. Guest speaker Rev. Dr. Derrick Doherty. Special singers and music.
The church was established in 1855 when people came to church on horse and buggy. The original church pews are still there with a separation down the middle. Women and children would sit on one side and men on the other. The original brass oil chandelier was electrified in the 1950s. The posts that hold up the inside of the structure are from the Weymouth Furnace. The church had an upstairs balcony, which was closed off in the 1950s.
Church members are faced with the fact that the church may be closing sometime in 2026. It’s in danger of being another local historical site going by the way side and becoming a forgotten memory.
