Justin Fields Suffers Toe Injury at Jets Camp, Expected Back for Week 1
On Thursday morning, July 24, 2025, New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields sustained a toe injury during the team’s second day of training camp. The injury occurred at approximately 9:25 a.m. during an 11-on-11 session when Fields rolled to his right and threw an incomplete short pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert. After the throw, Fields pulled up, went to the ground, and sat briefly before limping off the field with help from a trainer.
Fields spent several minutes in the injury tent before being carted off. He was then seated in the passenger seat and taken to the locker room. Though he left the field via cart, Fields was later seen walking into the team facility under his own power.
Head coach Aaron Glenn, speaking after practice, said he did not yet know the full extent of the injury and was awaiting further medical evaluation and a review of practice film. Glenn stated, “When anybody goes down, there’s a lump in my throat. I hate injuries for any player. But the thing is, I want to make sure exactly what the injury is before I move forward on my thought process.” He also said he assumed Fields was stepped on during the play, based on the offensive call involved.
By noon Eastern Time, the Jets announced that Fields had dislocated a toe on his right foot but did not suffer a fracture. The team confirmed that the injury was not considered serious, labeling him day-to-day. A source told ESPN that Fields is expected to be ready for the Jets’ Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The news of Fields’ injury prompted immediate movement in betting markets. Before the incident, the Jets’ win total for the 2025 regular season was set at 5.5, with the Over priced at –150 and the Under at +120 across several sportsbooks. Following the injury, the Over adjusted to –110 and the Under shortened. The team’s odds to make the playoffs shifted from +500 to approximately +630. Their AFC East title odds moved from around +1800 to as long as +2400, while Super Bowl futures, previously listed at +25000, drifted to as far as +40000 at Caesars.
Justin Fields’ individual futures were also available across sportsbooks. His MVP odds were listed at +10000 on DraftKings, +15000 on BetMGM and FanDuel, and +20000 on Caesars. His passing yards over/under ranged from 2500.5 to 2650.5, and his passing touchdowns total was set at 14.5. For rushing stats, Fields had an over/under of 675.5 rushing yards at BetMGM and 650.5 at Caesars, with 5.5 rushing touchdowns on both platforms. Earlier in the offseason, Fields had received more MVP bets at PointsBet than Jalen Hurts or Patrick Mahomes, according to ESPN.
Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets in free agency and was declared the team’s starting quarterback in March 2025. He began last season as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starter, appearing in the first six games before being replaced by Russell Wilson. Prior to Pittsburgh, Fields played for the Chicago Bears.
Since arriving in New York, Fields has been learning a new offensive system under first-time play-caller Tanner Engstrand. The injury now limits his training camp reps at a time when he is working to build chemistry with new teammates and adjust to a different playbook.
With Fields temporarily sidelined, veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who has 58 career NFL starts, assumed first-team duties during practice. Following Fields’ departure, the Jets paused 11-on-11 work and switched to special teams drills. Taylor addressed the offense, and right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker shared his message: “He just said, ‘Let’s lock in. Nothing changes. Let’s go out and dominate.’”
Also on the Jets’ quarterback roster are Adrian Martinez, the 2024 United Football League MVP, and rookie Brady Cook. Neither has thrown an NFL pass. General Manager Darren Mougey and a team doctor were seen discussing the situation after Fields left the field.
The Jets have experienced several recent high-profile quarterback injuries. In 2023, Aaron Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon on the fourth snap of the season opener. In 2022, Zach Wilson suffered a preseason knee injury against the Eagles and missed three games. Previous franchise quarterbacks, including Sam Darnold, Chad Pennington, Vinny Testaverde, and Joe Namath, also dealt with significant injuries during their tenures.
When asked whether Fields’ injury triggered any sense of déjà vu, offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker, a 2021 draft pick, said, “No, man. It’s just football. Unfortunately, you are going to have injuries. It’s a contact sport.”
Fields has a documented history of injuries, including cracked ribs, a separated AC joint in his shoulder, a dislocated thumb, and a hip strain during his NFL career.
The Jets’ Week 1 opponent is the Pittsburgh Steelers, Fields’ former team. The game was initially expected to feature Fields and Rodgers facing off against their previous franchises. Rodgers is not currently active due to his recovery from last season’s Achilles injury.
At this time, Fields remains day-to-day, and the team plans to proceed without changes to its offensive identity. Glenn said that their approach wouldn’t shift regardless of who is under center. “It’s more about the play style than the playbook,” he said. “Our players understand we are going to play a certain way no matter who is in there. We’re going to keep moving no matter what the situation is.”
The Jets will continue training camp preparations while monitoring Fields’ recovery ahead of the season opener.
