Jets Waive Rookie QB Brady Cook, Finalize 53-Man Roster With Fields, Taylor
The New York Jets announced on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, that they waived rookie quarterback Brady Cook ahead of the NFL roster deadline. Cook joined the Jets as an undrafted free agent after five seasons at Missouri, where he threw for 9,251 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. After limited action in 2020 and 2021, he became Missouri’s starting quarterback in 2022. He remained in that role through 2024, with his best season coming in 2023 when he recorded 3,317 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.
Cook appeared in all three of the Jets’ preseason games, completing 6 of 8 passes for 62 yards against the Green Bay Packers, going 6 of 11 for 74 yards and one touchdown versus the New York Giants, and starting the preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he completed 13 of 19 passes for 99 yards with one interception. His overall preseason totals were 25 completions on 38 attempts for 235 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.
With Cook waived, the Jets’ active roster at quarterback includes starter Justin Fields and backup Tyrod Taylor, while Adrian Martinez, who was also with the team during training camp, was waived earlier in the week. If Cook and Martinez clear waivers, they are eligible to return as members of the Jets’ 16-man practice squad.
Sports betting markets have posted current prices on the team and its starting quarterback. DraftKings lists the Jets at +3 (-115) for Week 1 with a total of 37.5, and sets their Super Bowl odds at +25,000. The Jets announced their full 53-man roster on Tuesday, confirming Cook’s release. Other quarterbacks recently made available around the league include Mike White, released by the Buffalo Bills, who has prior experience with both the Jets and the Miami Dolphins; Tommy DeVito, waived by the New York Giants, who has started 8 games and is 27 years old; and Kyle McCord, who played at Syracuse, was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 181st overall pick in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and was released after failing to make the Eagles’ 53-man roster.
Cook will be available to sign with another NFL team once the waiver process is complete, and if unclaimed, the Jets could sign him to their practice squad. At this time, the team’s active roster lists Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor as the only two quarterbacks.
