NJ Teacher Laura Caron Accused of Having a Sexual Relationship with 13-Year-Old Student, Granted Conditional Release from Jail
On January 15, 2025, a teacher named Laura Caron, who is 34 years old and works in Middle Township, Cape May County, New Jersey, was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to authorities, she is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students, which started when he was only 11 years old and in her fifth-grade class at Middle Township Elementary School No. 2.
This alleged relationship resulted in the birth of a child in 2019 when the boy was 13 years old.
On Tuesday, Caron appeared in court, where a judge ruled that she could be released from jail with restrictions while the case proceeds.
Her attorney, John Tumelty, argued that the state arrested her before completing DNA testing and claimed that there is currently no evidence proving Caron’s daughter is related to the victim.
Caron’s release comes with strict conditions.
Judge Christopher Gibson has ordered that she cannot contact the school district, the victim, or the victim’s family.
She is also required to comply with state guidelines when contacting her daughter.
Caron, originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and a former basketball player at Cabrini University, will return to court on February 25 at 9 a.m.
The allegations have deeply shaken the Middle Township community.
The investigation began in December 2024, when the boy’s father made a Facebook post saying that Caron’s 5-year-old child looked much like him and his son.
Because of this post, the school’s superintendent, David Salvo, contacted the police, which started the investigation.
After speaking with the boy’s father, investigators learned that his son had been one of Caron’s students, which led them to uncover more details about what had happened.
Further investigations found the boy and his siblings had been living with Caron between 2016 and 2020.
Their mother initially allowed them to stay with Caron, but eventually, it became permanent.
During this time, Caron acted as what New Jersey now calls a “resource parent,” which is another term for a foster parent.
While staying at Caron’s home, the victim’s siblings reported seeing troubling things.
They said they often woke up to find their brother in Caron’s bed and witnessed Caron sexually assaulting his brother one time when they thought he was asleep.
One sibling even said the two would take showers together.
As the investigation continued, the siblings told police that their brother admitted to being the father of Caron’s child.
They also said he had begged them not to tell anyone because he didn’t want her to get in trouble.
After Caron’s baby was born, the boy reportedly started sleeping in Caron’s bedroom every night and kept his clothes in her drawers.
When questioned, the boy confirmed to investigators that he and Caron had been in a relationship, and he admitted they were together twice a week until 2020.
In addition to her teaching career, Caron has connections to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where she grew up in Warrington.
After attending Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, she went to Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania, where she graduated in 2013 with a degree in elementary education.
While at Cabrini, she played basketball for the women’s team.
The university, however, closed in 2024.
Later, Caron began working as a teacher in the Middle Township School District in December 2014.
By 2021, she earned about $58,000 a year, based on state pension records.
So far, the school district has not commented on her employment status or the case.
