In Wake of Hurricane Erin, Atlantic City Residents and Extreme Weather Survivors Rally to Demand Climate Superfund Act
Just days after Hurricane Erin battered the East Coast with dangerous surf, flooding, and widespread beach closures, dozens of Atlantic City residents and community advocates will rally outside the District 2 legislative office of Senator Vince Polistina and Assemblymembers Claire Swift and Donald Guardian to demand urgent action on climate change.
The storm, which closed beaches and strained local economies up and down the Jersey Shore, is the latest reminder that climate-fueled disasters carry heavy costs for working families, small businesses, and taxpayers. Advocates will call on lawmakers to pass the New Jersey Climate Superfund Act (S3545/A4696) — legislation that would make the biggest fossil fuel companies pay for the damages caused by climate change and provide funding for climate-resilient infrastructure upgrades across the state.
Participants will also urge Congressman Jeff Van Drew to oppose federal efforts to shield Big Oil from liability for climate destruction, even as local communities face escalating costs from floods, storms, and extreme heat.
