An Afternoon of Reflection: Millville Women on the Homefront During World War II

Women’s History Month provides an opportunity to recognize and honor the significant contributions of women to American history, culture, and society. This year, the Millville Historical Society will highlight the roles of New Jersey women during World War II, with special emphasis on those from the Millville community. On Saturday, March 14, from 1 to 4 p.m., an event will take place at the Wood Mansion House, 821 Columbia Avenue. The afternoon will feature a book discussion, exhibition, period music, and refreshments centering on the efforts and sacrifices made by local women during the war.

Dr. Patricia Chappine will be the guest author and discuss her book, New Jersey Women During World War II. Her presentation will explore the unique challenges New Jersey women faced while navigating life on the home front and abroad during WWII. Dr. Chappine is an adjunct professor at Stockton University, where she has taught since 2014.

Live WWII-era music will be performed by David Anderson (keyboard) and John Gainfort (vocals). The accompanying exhibit, Millville Women on the Homefront during World War II, features vintage photos, newspaper clippings, propaganda posters, and artifacts illustrating how Millville woman supported the war effort. These activities included cultivating Victory Gardens; working in factories producing blood plasma bottles, fabrics, and uniforms; participating in scrap drives; purchasing war bonds and stamps, assisting troops stationed in Millville through organizations like the USO and American Red Cross; knitting for service members; and joining the U.S. Civil Defense Corps, Army Nurse Corps, WACS, and WAVES.

Refreshments will include donuts prepared from an original Red Cross recipe, served by “Donut Dollies,” along with other treats based on wartime recipes. Artifacts are provided by the Millville Historical Society, the Millville Army Air Field Museum, and WheatonArts. The event is free and open to the public; donations are welcome. Parking is available behind the Mansion via Church Street.
