Remembering those who have fallen to serve and protect their countries is a centuries-old tradition in cultures around the world. In 1868, Decoration Day was established here in America as a special day to lay flowers and decorate graves of those who lost their lives during the Civil War. Decoration Day gradually became known as Memorial Day and following World War I, Memorial Day came to honor fallen American military from all wars. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday.
There are many ways that veterans are honored throughout the year, but Memorial Day is a special time to remember all of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
It is the Millville Woman’s Club’s (MWC) tradition to place a wreath for veterans at the Mt Pleasant Cemetery. MWC members Joan Fauver, Mary Miskelly, Kathy Bennett and Barbara Scudder placed a wreath commemorating all veterans on Memorial Day.
