BRIDGETON, N.J. – A 10-year-old girl has passed away after sustaining injuries caused by being ejected from a ride at the Deerfield Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12.
The young girl, whose name has not been released by authorities, was on a ride called the “Super Sizzler” when the terrible incident occurred at approximately 6:18 p.m. The “Extreme” amusement park ride was manufactured by Wisdom Rides, Inc. and has rotating arms and counter-rotating cars. She was airlifted from the Rosenhayn Fairgrounds to Cooper University hospital in Camden, where she was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m.
An investigation into how the accident happened is ongoing, according to a press released posted by N.J. State Police.
According to Wisdom Rides’ website, riders of the “Super Sizzler” must be at least 36 inches tall, and anyone under 48 inches must be accompanied by an adult. All riders are secured with a lap bar.
Sunday’s parade was cancelled by organizers of the Deerfield Harvest Festival. Additionally, Skelly’s Amusements, who operate the rides, announced that none of the rides would run on Sunday — despite having permission from the Department of Community Affairs to continue.
“We will not be open today at the Harvest Festival. Even though we have been given permission to operate the other rides by the state, we don’t have it in our heart. We thank the sponsors of the Festival for their understanding,” Skelly’s Amusements wrote on Facebook on Sunday.
They have said they are fully cooperating with the investigation into how the 10-year-old girl was ejected from their ride.
Even without the parade or rides, the Deerfield Harvest Festival remained open on Sunday so that community members could come together in the wake of the tragedy.
