WOODBURY, N.J. – While last year’s flu season was labeled as moderately severe by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), health officials are saying the upcoming flu season could be severe as on flu-related death has been reported already.

In order to help county residents stay healthy, the Gloucester County Department of Health will make flu shots available for free beginning Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger suggests residents to get their flu shot early.

“The best way to keep yourself and those around you flu-free this year is to get the flu shot as soon as you can,” Damminger said.  “It’s never too early to start protecting yourself, especially with the past few flu seasons being as rough as they have been.”

Freeholder Jim Jefferson, Liaison to the Department of Health said that the flu shots are being offered at no cost and are scheduled at various times and places to make getting one easy.

“There is no cost for our residents and all you need to do is show up with valid ID,” Jefferson said.  “There is a flu shot clinic scheduled in every town so that residents can conveniently and easily access this service.”

The CDC advises that almost everyone over the age of 6 months, including pregnant women, receive the flu vaccine every year.

“Every resident who gets immunized against the flu will ultimately cut down on the amount of visits to our hospital emergency rooms, employers, schools and other public health agencies during flu season,”  said Jefferson.

Clinics are scheduled for weekends and during evening hours, with special clinics just for daycare and pre-school aged children and their families. The county even provides one drive-thru clinic for seniors and those who have a hard time standing in line.

This year’s quadrivalent seasonal flu vaccine contains the following four viruses:  A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)-pdm09-like virus; A/Singapore/INFIMH-16-0019/2016 (H3N2)-like virus; B/Colorado/06/2017-like virus (B/Victoria lineage); B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus

A full schedule is also being mailed out to county residents in the county’s newsletter.  More information about the County’s Flu Shot program is online. Residents can go online to www.gloucestercountynj.gov and print and complete their consent forms one-week prior to start of program.
