WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. — The Annual Gloucester County Military Service Medal Ceremony will honor over 70 veterans Saturday, September 21 at 11:00 A.M. at the auditorium at RiverWinds in West Deptford.
The ceremony was originally planned for September 14 but is being rescheduled due to the interment of U.S. Navy Fireman 3rd Class Harold Costill, who was killed in action on board the USS West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. His remains were identified this past April. Costill will be interred with full military honors.
According to the Facebook page, “Harold K. Costill, Bring Him Home,” the funeral service will be held in the Clayton High School Performing Arts Center on Pop Kramer Blvd. in Clayton, NJ and burial will be at Cedar Green Cemetery located next to the high school. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 to 12:00 at the PAC. The funeral service will be from 12:00 to 1:00. Costill’s coffin will then travel to his final resting place from 1:00 to 1:30 and services are expected to be over by 2:00 P.M.
The Military Service Medal Ceremony was rescheduled so there would be no conflict for those who wish to attend the funeral of Costill and those who wish to attend the medal ceremony that honors the county’s veterans.
The Freeholders commissioned the Gloucester County Service Medal in 2001 as a way to honor the county’s veteran residents according to Freehold Director Robert M. Damminger, “to show our gratitude for their service.”
The medal is available to Gloucester County Veterans who have served on active duty in the military and received an honorable discharge.
