CAMDEN, N.J. – The Roberto Clemente Gymnasium located at the North Camden Community Complex was officially opened recently after major renovations were completed.
Mayor Francisco “Frank” Moran, U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross, Assemblyman Bill Spearman, City officials, and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) were present at the ribbon cutting ceremony held on July 3 which also signified the start of Camden City’s Summer Recreation Program and opening of the public pools for the 2019 Summer season.
“The City is excited to be able to offer a wide range of programming in addition to quality recreational facilities for our residents,” Moran said in a press release.
The renovations were funded in part by the City’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), a Federal Entitlement Program.
“We thank our partners at HUD for providing the essential funding needed to support community based initiatives in urban areas like Camden,” Moran said. “Now with these renovations complete at our North Camden Community Complex, we feature activities like basketball, boxing, and swimming.”
The programs at the complex are free to Camden City residents.
HUD Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey Lynne Patton said how recreation centers, like the North Camden Community Complex, are instrumental to a stable and robust community.
“Community centers are the epicenter of a strong neighborhood,” Patton said. “The HUD-funded renovations at Roberto Clemente Gymnasium will provide children, young adults, and seniors a beautiful, safe place to advance their physical health and contribute to their emotional well-being.”
